Have there ever been items of clothing or accessories you threw away thinking they would never come back into fashion? Or have you been digging through your wardrobe and found something you can hardly believe you ever wore?!
We all know that fashion has a reputation of performing U turns but we never, ever thought we would see the day when bum bags made a comeback. Yet believe it or not, they are this year's "must have" accessory and can be found gracing bottoms on a High Street near you.
The ski slopes are going to be no place to escape from this iconic 80’s accessory either… expect to see a few this season. And if you can’t beat them, join them. We have to admit that they do at least serve a real purpose out on-piste as the perfect intermediary between pockets and rucksacks. If all you need to carry is a snack, phone and suncream then these next-gen bum bags could be the perfect accessory. Just remember – you heard it here first!
Lowe Alpine – Mesa
This technical bum bag is a favourite with hikers, runners and we have no doubt, skiers. A padded hip belt makes it comfortable to wear and there is plenty of room for all the gear you need for a day on the slopes. £27 at Lowe Alpine.
Snowmule Bum Bag
Designed specifically for skiers, this bum bag is the brainchild of British designer Kevin Stevens. Not only does it have the room you need for essential accessories out on the slopes, but it comes with two retractable handles designed to tow the kids with. Anyone who has been skiing with young children will appreciate just how useful this is. Very clever! £25.00 at White Stone.
The Coloradan
One for the fashionistas! Being practical does not mean it has to be black and serious. The Coloradan Fanny Pack (as our friends across the pond call them) in blue and red is definitely the retro eye-catching choice. Available from B Fresh Gear for $33.
So, with Bum Bags making a comeback we wondered if the retro theme would make an appearance in any other ski gear this season. Turns out the trend is catching with trousers, jackets and more all taking on a decidedly 80’s style with bright colours, flares (yes, you read that right) and vintage knit patterns all making an appearance.
Adidas - Flared Ski Trouser by Stella McCartney
Available in this fantastically bright red or a deep black, for those who want to be less conspicuous, these flared trousers with Techno fabric, two-tone pattern, and multipockets are both practical as well as eye-catching! £160 from Lyst.
FENDI - Tech-jersey Ski Leggings
Who said the stirrup cuff leggings would never make a comeback? Well, FENDI have decided now is the time with these bold but surprisingly practical bright purple ski leggings which are cut from supportive tech-jersey, woven with wool for added warmth. Combined with an insulating terry backing and stirrup cuffs that will easily slot into your boots, they could be a great addition to your skiing wardrobe. £196 from Net-A-Porter
Maje - Tricolour Jacquard Knit Sweater
Back at the chalet you can keep with the retro theme with the jacquard knit sweater- adorned all over with wonderful tricolour motifs. Featuring a high collar, long sleeves and a ribbed finish at the collar, cuffs and hem, it is perfect for snuggling up in by the fire. €159 from Maje.
