Road Trip in Colorado

Road Trip in Colorado

Travelling across the pond to North America can seem like a daunting feat. A long flight, jet lag, who wants to do that? Well, after my recent trip to Colorado I can safely say I’m dying to go back for more reasons than one. After a very well serviced flight with British Airways from Heathrow to Denver I was soon heading down the freeway to Breckenridge. A beautiful drive which took around two hours, far superior to the mountain drives in Europe and helped ever so slightly by the fact I was driving a convertible Mustang.

Breckenridge is a charming mining town with plenty of history and a great atmosphere – I really enjoyed exploring the towns many shops, bars and restaurants. I was fortunate enough to stay at One Ski Hill Place which sits in an elevated position in Breckenridge. The hotel is perfect for couples and larger groups with condos ranging from one to four bedrooms. My time here was thoroughly enjoyed and the staff were hugely friendly and helpful, the slope side view from my room would be a personal recommendation of mine.

The next stop took me to Vail which was an hour from Breckenridge and again, the views were exceptional, consisting of 360-degree views of the surrounding mountains that could be seen for miles - not bad in 30-degree heat with not a cloud in sight. Vail is a larger, more spacious resort which has a variety of stunning hotels and residences. The Solaris residences and The Lion Hotel were among my favourite, both were very high calibre. I didn’t actually stay in Vail, I spent two nights in Beaver Creek, an exclusive, gated resort located 20 minutes outside of Vail. Beaver Creek offers excellent après ski at the base of the slopes and a lovely resort centre with its very own ice rink.

After an excellent few days it was time to head to what is now my favourite resort in Colorado and that, is Aspen. I would highly recommend driving over Independence Pass on the way as the views are truly spectacular, a seemingly ongoing theme throughout my trip. Aspen really has it all, it is full of life and has all the qualities that you’d expect from a city. A multitude of luxury accommodation ranging from Private Homes, Residences and Hotels, designer shops, high end restaurants, bars and nightclubs. I spent three nights in Aspen and one in Snowmass, another superb resort located around 15 minutes from Aspen. Snowmass was very spoiling, I was lucky enough to stay at the Viceroy Hotel which has the most amazing breakfast bar. I even got the chance to head up the mountain in Snowmass and sample the Mountain Coaster, something I would highly recommend for any adrenaline enthusiasts out there.

On my final night I returned to Aspen and stayed at The Little Nell which was one of my major highlights of the trip, aside from its unrivalled location and some of the best food I have ever had, I got the chance to head down to the famous wine cellar, drink champagne and even hold a GBP 30,000 bottle of wine! I think my stay here was the highlight of the trip, along with paddle boarding just outside of Aspen, seeing deer, otters and even coyotes, as well as visiting some of the luxury private homes we feature such as ‘On Top of Mill’ and ‘Aspen Oasis’.

All in all, I had an incredible time in Colorado and would urge anyone who hasn’t ventured outside of Europe to go, you will not be disappointed.
