For many skiiers, the 'après' atmosphere of a ski resort is an important consideration when choosing where to go on a winter holiday (for over 18s of course). It's often hard to resist the pull of those famous mountain bars, enticing skiers in with Jager bombs, European electro pop and Indi bands playing catchy covers. Fluorescent onesies and dodgy mullets may be a rare sight on the slopes these days, but we still love dancing around in our ski boots (and there are cooler hang outs too of course.)
St Anton in Austria is recognised as one of the top party resorts in Europe and you really are spoiled for choice here both on the slopes and in the village. Après ski is taken very seriously in St Anton and can be enjoyed in many hotspots including top favourites, Krazy Kanguruh and The Mooserwirt. It has been said that The Mooserwirt sells up to 5,000 litres of beer a day, and I have personally been there when over 2,500 Jager bombs were sold in just one hour alone!! Despite this amazing achievment, you'll be pleased to know that St Anton's apres skiers are expertly managed- the streets are patrolled at night by 'sshhh' police who ensure there are no disturbances.
With these great claims, it comes as no surpirse that according to several sources, St Anton currently holds the crown for being the best après resort in the Alps. It has many other resorts biting at its heels though. Zermatt and Val d'Isere are close runners up and with a Folie Douce opening in Meribel this season, the Three Valleys has somewhere new and extra special for enjoying a few afternoon drinks this year! Having spent several seasons in resorts that offer some of the best après available, and having lived in St Anton for two years myself, I can say with a hand on my heart that St Anton's après is close to unbeatable, even if it is being constantly challenged! Perhaps I'm a little biassed though...
I do, of course, have to add that the bars I've mentioned also offer excellent food at lunch time and are a welcome, non alcoholic stop and shelter from the cold too!
