Something we hear on a regular basis from clients is that they will only look at high altitude resorts as they are snow sure; Anything under 1850 is a no go for fear there will be no snow. In reality, this is not the case and there are many factors to take into consideration when looking at snow levels.
Some ski areas require a smaller snow base than others to open their pistes. The pasture fields that surround Morzine are a good example of this where you only need a little snow as it holds better on the cold grass and there are no boulders to cover.
Local geography also plays a factor. For example, the cold air found whipping over the Chamonix glaciers helps prevent melting and keeps the snow compact allowing days to pass with no fresh snow to little effect.
The Arlberg Ski area with resorts such as St. Anton sitting at 1600 is one of the best early season areas to travel to due to its location and the local mountain formations. When I visited some of our properties in the first week of December last season, the snow was incredible, so much so that we skied knee deep powder on piste!
Man's interventions have also affected the way in which resorts keep their snow. Cannon snow has improved dramatically and creates far better conditions and a far greater quantity of snow than in the past. You'll also find resorts are increasing the percentage of their pistes that are covered by cannons with many reaching 80-100% coverage which is a huge help.
