Traditional Luxury vs. Contemporary Luxury?

Traditional Luxury vs. Contemporary Luxury?

When looking for a luxurious mountain holiday the most divisive question can be whether to go modern and svelte, or Alpine and traditional. Both fit with the skiing vibe; both offer opulence and utter comfort, both remain equally tempting... If like us, you’re finding it hard to choose, we thought we’d contrast perfect examples of the proverbial coin, and help you choose ‘heads or tails’ of this tricky dilemma.

For the classic Alpine elegance… (heads)

If you’re looking for the feel of a grand Austrian family home, Chalet Eugenia presents a sheer extravagance; vast oak-beamed ceilings, antique furniture and art and a stunning wood paneled dining room, all evoking a bygone era of effortless elegance and style.

One myth when choosing a traditional style chalet or hotel is that the furnishings will be slightly tired or outdated, and with these properties nothing could be further from the truth. Each cushion, lampshade or tile is specifically chosen to give an air of charm and authentic sophistication.

This is clearly demonstrated in Chalet Truffe Blanche, Verbier. Found in one of Verbier’s most exclusive addresses, the chalet skillfully balances classic decoration and old-fashioned character with modern design and state of the art features. Oozing indulgence in every detail, from its Roman Empire inspired 15m indoor onyx lined pool and lavish spa, to private nightclub, sushi and vodka bar and teak flooring throughout all living areas.

Or, for a hotel in the same style, the Austrian Gasthof Post will not disappoint. Previously a royal retreat, the décor remains loyal to the traditional Austrian way of life; wood paneled rooms, antiques and hunting trophies adorning the walls; maintaining a timeless charm hand in hand with pure elegance. Combine this with a newly renovated spa, extravagant four-poster beds, Michelin graded restaurant and exclusive boutiques and your skiing holiday just got exceptional!

On the other hand, funky and futuristic… (tails)

Ski in, ski out, Chalet Mont Blanc contrasts perfectly with the ‘traditional’ chalets; furnishings muted and sleek, floor to ceiling windows, indoor and outdoor pools, decadent spa and a helipad. Combining leather and chrome, with fur and glass, high ceilings and sophisticated furniture, Chalet Mont Blanc offers a suave and spacious ski retreat for those wanting contemporary luxury on an impressive scale.

Chalet Pont du Cam, Meribel, in a similar thread allows for its guests to feel every detail has been thought of; no expense has been spared in its luxury and funky decoration. Whether it’s the open plan living and eating area with a central open fireplace, bar and pool table or the outdoor hot tub and glistening bathrooms, Pont du Cam presents itself as a sexy, urban chalet juxtaposed delicately by the natural splendor of the mountains.

For a hotel in the same category, Avenue Lodge in Val d’Isere is a great finale for our exploration of the two styles of Alpine holidays. This chic hotel exudes polished excellence with trendy furnishings that compliment the mountain scape without being at all traditional or expected. A flash of red in every room amongst neutral shades, a sumptuous indoor pool and a cool sultry bar makes this hotel incredibly contemporary without being pretentious.
