The destination
At 1,930m above sea level the village of Obergurgl in the Ötztal Alps commands a bird’s eye view of the impressive alpine landscape that surrounds this premier Austrian skiing destination. Along with the neighbouring hamlet of Hochgurgl, which is situated higher at 2,150m above sea level, this pair of linked, and architecturally well preserved, ski resorts are aptly known as the ‘Diamonds of the Alps’.
With well under 500 hundred local residents calling the village home year round, Obergurgl is a quiet, charming resort, one that lends itself particularly well to family skiing holidays, along with romantic holidays for couples looking to combine amazing skiing experiences with great dining and an outstanding array of accommodation options. This was the first boutique chalet to open in Obergurgl, and we believe it to be a particularly wonderful place to stay.
Lying at the southern end of the Ötztal Gurglertal Valley, Obergurgl forms part of the Obergurgl-Hochgurgl ski resort area, and is considered one of the most peaceful resorts in the region, with its streets that are free of cars at night, and its views that are believed to be particularly breathtaking even for this idyllic part of the country.
The Oxford Ski Company and Obergurgl
Founded in 1998, we have been visiting the delightfully historic village of Obergurgl, and the neighbouring hamlet of Hochgurgl, for nearly twenty years now and count this charming and peaceful resort as one of our favourites in Austria, a country blessed with stunning alpine landscapes and some of the best pistes in all of Europe.
We find it to be a resort suitable for skiers of all experience levels with a great selection of pistes, including over 100km of pistes suitable for intermediate skiers, and several more challenging descents for the more experienced skier. There are also a number of off-piste routes that we recommend hiring a guide for.
