Skiing in Italy - The Sunny Side of the Alps
Italy features some of Europe’s most exquisite skiing, scenery, and food, making it a favourite destination for those after an alpine retreat. Oxford Ski Company has a large list of luxury ski chalets and hotels to arrange a personalised and magical skiing break – all within the fantastic locations of the Italian Alps and the Dolomites.
Luxury Ski Holidays in Italy
Relax in the sunnier climate and laid-back culture of luxury Italian ski resorts. This country is famous for bright scenic mountains, gourmet food, and diverse, quiet pistes that span hundreds of kilometres. The Dolomites and the Italian Alps are the two main locations for fantastic Italian skiing.
Skiing in the Dolomites
This stunning mountain range is located in northeastern Italy and stretches from the Piave Valley in the east to the River Adige in the west. The Dolomites are famous for their distinctive jagged peaks, thick forests, snow-covered landscapes, and some of the most breathtaking views in all of Europe.
Our top choices of luxury resorts in the Dolomite region are Alta Badia, Cortina, and Plan De Corones, all of which boast an impressive selection of well-appointed chalets and luxurious hotels for you to make a selection from.
A truly spectacular way to see the Dolomites is through the famed Sellaronda circuit. This route loops around the massif of the Sella mountain range and takes about a day to complete – factoring in time for mountain hut stops and a sumptuous lunch along the way. Part of its popularity is its relative ease for intermediate skiers. That being said, we recommend planning timings with the help of chalet staff and hotel concierge to ensure you catch all the lifts in time!
Skiing in the Italian Alps
Some of Italy’s finest luxury ski chalets and resorts are found straddling the French-Italian border in the Italian Alps. The slopes here are sunny, and the skiing is taken just as seriously as their food and après ski culture. Our top choice of luxury ski resort in the Italian Alps is the Via Lattea or Milky Way. This is a vast and connected ski area with over 400 km of piste, six resorts, vibrant nightlife, and a truly authentic Italian spirit.
With our network of industry contacts, personalised service, and up-to-date advice that we offer, your next Italian ski break will set the bar befittingly high.
Travelling to ski in Italy
The Italian Alps are located at the top of the country, far from the closest Italian airports in Milan - Malpensa Airport, Linate Airport and Airport Orio Al Serio (Bergamo). The best airports to fly to are in Switzerland, such as Zürich Airport - only a two-hour commute to Italian slopes, and Genova Airport - just one and a half hours from the closest Italian resorts.
British citizens will not need a visa to enter Italy. However, your passport will need to be less than 10 years old on the day you enter, and it must be valid for at least three months after the day you plan on leaving. To see if your passport meets these requirements, look for its date of issue and expiry date.
At the Italian border control, you may be asked to show proof of accommodation, proof of a return ticket, and proof of insurance for your trip.

When is the best time to go skiing in Italy?
The best time to ski in Italy is roughly between late December and late April. While snowfall is not as reliable as in other Alpine locations, the low temperatures and dry air preserve the snow and keep it pristine for a longer amount of time.
- December - The best skiing is reserved for the resorts located at the highest elevations.
- January - Crowded slopes with powder-like snow, colder temperatures, and the best time to ski at resorts with lower bases.
- February - Increasing crowds, but fabulous piste conditions with deep snow packs.
- March to April - Sunshine, warmer temperatures, and quieter slopes.
