The destination

Tignes, located in the Tarentaise Valley, which is in the Rhône-Alpes region of south-eastern France, is one of the most snow-sure of all the ski resorts in France. At 2,100 metres above sea level it boasts wonderfully picturesque and snow-covered pistes, even at times when other resorts are only able to offer skiers sludgy runs. Together with the nearby resort of Val d’Isère, the two popular resorts form the ‘Tignes-Val d'Isere’ ski area.

Tignes is not one single village, but five villages – Val Claret, Tignes le Lac, Le Lavachet, Tignes Les Boisses and Tignes-les-Brévières. The first three are at an altitude of 2,100 metres, while the latter two are located further down the valley. The villages are similar in many regards, but each village possesses its own unique charm, with each worthy of visiting whilst in Tignes if only to stop in for something warm, or something cold, to drink whilst passing by.

There are some superb après ski bars to be found in Tignes, including our pick, la Folie Douce in Val-d’Isère, which is a pumping party venue, as well as a number of superb restaurants. We recommend La Ferme des 3 Capucines in Le Lavachet.

Luxury Skiing in Tignes

With more than 300km of pistes to explore, of which more than 50 percent are green and blue, Tignes represents an ideal skiing holiday destination for families and groups with skiers of varying experience levels. Expert skiers will also find Tignes an exciting skiing destination with its selection of advanced runs that are suitable only for the most experienced of skiers.

Beginners will love the four different nursery slope areas that Tignes offers – Val Claret, Tignes Les Lac, Tignes Le Lavachet, and Tignes Les Brevieres, while intermediate and advanced skiers will find plenty of challenging runs on the 2,748m L’Aiguille Percée, as well as Tignes’ pièce de résistance, the Grande Motte glacier, which can be reached from Val Claret.
