The destination
This picturesque ski resort is situated in the Portes du Soleil region between France and Switzerland. While famous for its ski offerings, Châtel has a storied agricultural background. Fresh local produce abounds and has significantly influenced the local dining scene, making this a sought-after destination for gourmet food lovers as well as winter sports enthusiasts.
This sprawling region is criss-crossed with some 650km of pistes, with an additional 49km of cross-country trails. Within the Châtel region alone, there are around 130km worth of pistes to enjoy. The resort is equipped with 45 lifts, and the ski range covers 1,000 vertical metres. The village is also home to the Smooth Park, where beginner to intermediate freestylers can hone their skills. There’s also a free ski bus connecting the village to the pistes. With so much to offer, it’s no wonder that Châtel has blossomed into such a popular winter sports destination.
Perhaps best of all, Châtel is only an hour’s drive from Geneva. The ease of accessibility makes this a popular destination even for quick weekend retreats and short holidays.
Experience Luxury Skiing in Châtel
As mentioned, Châtel’s roots are in farming rather than winter sports, and there’s still a traditional atmosphere about the town. It sits on south-facing slopes above Abondance Valley, and it’s hemmed in by pine trees. All of this grants Châtel a rustic, sunny ambiance that makes it popular with holidaymakers.
Gastronomy in Châtel is second-to-none. A farm-to-table concept prevails here, with an assortment of artisanal foods and unbelievably fresh produce on offer. A culinary highlight of a holiday in Châtel is ‘High Tea on the Farm’, during which guests can taste local delicacies and even learn a bit about how the local Abondance cheese is made.
Many of the farm buildings located throughout the area are quite historic—some even hundreds of years old. The Ministry of Tourism in France has granted Châtel the ‘Famille Plus’ badge, highlighting the wealth of family-friendly activities on offer. However, there is plenty in Châtel to entertain travellers of any ilk, including a satisfying après-ski night scene.
