The destination
Alpe d’Huez is an attractive and purpose-built luxury ski village situated in France’s Oisan Alps. Most ski travel agents tell their customers that it stands at roughly 1,860 metres above elevation, but this is really just the average height of the slopes. In truth, they begin at 1,250 metres and soar 3,330 metres at the highest reaches. Along the way, there’s something for every grade of skier here—from seasoned expert to novice.
The world’s first Poma lift was installed here back in the 1930s. At this point, Alpe d’Huez’s fate as a world-class winter sports destination was sealed. During the 1968 Grenoble Olympics, the bobsledding competitions were held here. The sun-drenched, south-facing slopes attract families of skiers from around the world, though this is only one facet of the local character. For every easy-going run, there’s a stretch of expert terrain to be found.
Alpe d’Huez has a serious off-season claim to fame as well. Every other year, the Tour de France includes a gruelling up-hill stage at the ski resort that sees cyclists battling for position on an uphill climb with 21 hairpin turns. Needless to say, skiers taking advantage of the excellent lift system see a much gentler side of Alpe d’Huez.
Experience Alpe d’Huez
Alpe d’Huez south-facing position on the Oisans means that the slopes here enjoy plenty of sunshine. That’s why many affectionately refer to the resort as ‘L’lle au Soleil’—or the Isle of the Sun. It looms gloriously over a magnificent landscape that takes in a variety of terrain that skiers of any ability level can enjoy.
At The Oxford Ski Company, we work tirelessly to ensure that each of our clients enjoys an exceptional Alpine retreat tailored to their tastes and ability levels and meets the level they expect for a luxury ski holiday. This involves much more than finding the most suitable Alpe d’Huez luxury chalet based on their preferences and the size of their group. We also assist in organising side trips and specialised activities to enrich their stay.
In all, Alpe d’Huez offers some 250 km of well-manicured pistes. However, there is plenty to see off-piste as well. If you’d like to explore the mountainous terrain during your stay, we can pair your group with a knowledgeable guide who can take you off the well-packed trail. Keeping your group’s skill levels in mind, this guide can take your party off-piste to the routes with the freshest snow.
