The route to the mountains
There is a temptation, when planning a ski trip, to treat the flight as the easy part. Geneva appears on the departures board, the timings work and the decision is made. But anyone who has spent a Saturday afternoon inching along the road towards the Tarentaise will know that the airport you choose matters rather more than that.
For some resorts, Geneva remains the obvious answer. For others, a well-timed flight into Chambéry or Innsbruck can transform the journey; and while the smallest airports often offer the shortest transfers, limited flight schedules mean that the closest airport is not always the most sensible one.
So, if the aim is to spend less time travelling and more time in the mountains, these are the Alpine airports worth knowing, and the ski resorts they serve best.

Geneva Airport:
The dependable all-rounder
Geneva Airport has long been one of the main gateways to the French Alps. With a good choice of flights from the UK and some of the region’s best-known ski resorts little more than an hour away, it’s easy to see why.
Morzine, Les Gets, Megève and Chamonix
Morzine, Les Gets, Megève and Chamonix all sit around 1 hour 15 minutes from Geneva Airport in good conditions. Few Alpine airports put quite so much skiing within such easy reach of the arrivals hall.
That relatively short journey is particularly valuable on a long weekend or shorter stay, when an extra hour in the car is an hour you would rather spend in the mountains. With frequent flights from the UK throughout the day, Geneva also offers the freedom to choose an arrival time that suits the trip, rather than planning the trip around the flight.
Avoriaz
Avoriaz is around 1 hour 30 minutes from Geneva Airport in good conditions, making it another relatively straightforward option for those flying into Geneva.
The final part of the transfer is a little different. As Avoriaz is entirely car-free, you won’t simply be dropped outside your accommodation. Depending on where you are staying, arrival is usually via the Prodains Express cable car or the resort reception area, with the final journey completed from there. It requires a little more planning than neighbouring Morzine or Les Gets, but the overall journey from Geneva remains comfortably manageable.
Chambéry Airport:
The shorter route into the Tarentaise
For the Three Valleys and the Tarentaise, Chambéry Airport has geography firmly on its side. Courchevel and Méribel can both be reached in around 90 minutes or less in good conditions, while Val Thorens, Val d’Isère and Tignes sit roughly two hours away.
The trade-off is the flight schedule. Chambéry has far fewer services than Geneva, particularly from the UK, so the shortest transfer does not always mean the easiest overall journey. But when the flights line up, it can remove a considerable amount of time from the road.
Courchevel and Méribel
Courchevel and Méribel are among the easiest major ski resorts to reach from Chambéry Airport. Courchevel is approximately 95 kilometres away, with a transfer of around 1 hour 15 minutes in normal conditions, while Méribel is usually closer to 1 hour 30 minutes.
The difference becomes more noticeable when compared with flying into Geneva, where the journey into the Three Valleys is considerably longer. For a week-long stay that may simply be an inconvenience; for a long weekend, saving an hour or more on the road at either end can materially change the trip. If a suitable Chambéry flight is available, it is well worth considering before defaulting to Geneva.
Val Thorens, Val d’Isère and Tignes
Further into the mountains, Val Thorens, Val d’Isère and Tignes are all within roughly two hours of Chambéry Airport in good conditions. Val Thorens and Val d’Isère sit towards the lower end of that range, at around 1 hour 45 minutes, while Tignes is closer to two hours.
These are journeys where conditions matter. On a clear midweek arrival, Chambéry can make the transfer remarkably straightforward; on a snowy Saturday, the same roads can tell a very different story. Geneva offers considerably more choice when it comes to flight times, but if the Chambéry schedule works, the shorter distance makes it a particularly efficient way into this part of the French Alps.
Grenoble Airport:
A useful gateway to the French Alps
Grenoble comes into its own for resorts in the Isère region, while also providing another point of entry to the Three Valleys. It has a smaller winter schedule than Geneva, but its position on the western edge of the Alps can make for a pleasantly direct journey into the mountains.
Alpe d’Huez
Alpe d’Huez is the natural pairing with Grenoble Airport. The transfer takes around 1 hour 30 minutes in good conditions, with the final stretch climbing from the valley floor towards resort.
It is a simple enough journey to make Grenoble the first airport worth checking when Alpe d’Huez is the destination, particularly when the flight timings fall neatly around your stay.
Courchevel and Méribel
Grenoble also puts Courchevel and Méribel within roughly two hours by road. It may not be the closest airport to the Three Valleys, but it adds another useful route when planning the journey.
The real value is having the option. Rather than automatically routing through Geneva, Grenoble is worth keeping in the mix when comparing flights into Courchevel or Méribel.
Arranging the Journey with Oxford Ski Company
Once the most suitable airport has been chosen, the next consideration is how best to reach the resort. We work with a network of trusted transfer operators who know the Alpine roads well, from the main routes into the larger resorts to the more remote mountain villages. Their local experience is particularly valuable during the winter months, when weather and traffic can make journey times less predictable.
The operators we work with are carefully selected for their expertise, reliability and consistently high standards of service. Their experienced drivers understand the demands of mountain travel, while their vehicles are well maintained, comfortable and appropriately equipped for winter conditions. It means that whether travelling as a couple, family or larger group, the transfer is handled by specialists who know their routes and take pride in getting the details right.
So, which is the best airport for a ski holiday in the French Alps?
It depends on where you are going – and, perhaps more importantly, when.
For Morzine, Les Gets, Megève and Chamonix, Geneva is difficult to beat. The transfers are short and the choice of flights from the UK makes the entire journey relatively painless.
For Courchevel and Méribel, Chambéry offers the shortest transfer and is worth prioritising when suitable flights are available.
For Val d'Isère and Tignes, Chambéry wins on road distance, although Geneva's broader flight schedule means it will often remain the more practical choice.
For Alpe d'Huez, look first at Grenoble.
There is, however, one important caveat: the shortest transfer doesn't necessarily produce the shortest journey.
An inconvenient departure, connection or long wait for a limited regional service can quickly erase the hour saved on the road. The better question is therefore not simply which airport is closest to my ski resort?, but which route gets me there with the least friction?
