Luxury Hideouts for an ‘Off the Beaten Track’ Winter Escape

October 16, 2020  ·
Luxury Hideouts for an ‘Off the Beaten Track’ Winter Escape

This year more than ever, we are inspired by the appeal of an off the beaten track adventure. That’s why we’ve put together our list of epic luxury hideouts, which can be hired out exclusively for you and your party. From Iceland to Lapland, these once in a lifetime experiences offer a unique and exciting alternative to your typical Alpine ski resorts, providing something a little different for this year’s winter escape.

Deplar Farm, Iceland

Located on the Troll Peninsula in the northern part of Iceland, Deplar Farm oozes off-the-grid seclusion from its position in between two fjords of the mountainous Fljót Valley. Thirteen en-suite bedrooms sleeping up to 26 guests offer an exclusive use haven in the land of Fire and Ice. Perfect for those seeking a winter adrenaline fix akin to skiing, Deplar’s extensive activity list includes everything from sea kayaking and whale watching to horse riding and heli-skiing. For something more relaxing, hop between the geo-thermal heated pools, Viking sauna and Isopod flotation tanks for a traditional Icelandic spa experience. Deplar’s remote, far flung setting and lack of artificial light makes it a fantastic location for viewing the famous Aurora Borealis, should you prefer to simply sit under the stars and watch the night sky.

 Octola, Finnish Lapland

If a Lapland retreat is on your travel bucket-list, look no further than Octola, a full private wilderness lodge right on the Arctic Circle. With all-inclusive services offered as part of a 10-bedroom exclusive use property, Octola is surrounded by 300 hectares of private forest home to plenty of resident reindeer. Fully catered and hosted, Octola’s private chef can create a tailor made, Nordic inspired menu using locally-sourced produce for you and your guests, whilst your very own butler is on hand to help with everything from preparing the sauna to serving up meals. Where Octola really excels is its endless list of seasonal activities which run throughout the year. A wilderness guide can fill your days with a whole host of activities suitable for all ages. Choose from traditional alpine activities such as snowshoeing, tobogganing, skiing and sledding, or indulge in exciting Finnish experiences including igloo building, ice sculpting, sauna sessions and reindeer sleigh rides.

Arctic Bath, Sweden

Opened to the public at the start of 2020, this unique hotel is situated in Harads, Swedish Lapland, on the Lulea River. The central hotel building floats directly on the river which freezes over during winter and looks spectacular. Made up of 12 bedrooms, six floating cabins and six land cabins set on the shoreline, Arctic Bath sleeps up to 24 guests when booked for exclusive use. All rooms are elevated on stilts and feature floor-to-ceiling windows with outside decking areas from which to admire the surrounding views. A plethora of traditional winter activities can be booked during your stay at Arctic Bath, such as snowmobiling, husky sledding and cross-country skiing, whilst you can also take advantage of the onsite spa facilities including a sauna, plunge pool and hot and cold bath.

Levi Spirit, Finland

Positioned just a ten-minute drive away from the Levi ski resort, the largest in Finland, Levi Spirit is a stunning seven-bedroom log cabin sleeping up to 14 guests. Pairing modern, architectural design with thoughtful, eco-friendly touches, the villa blends in naturally to its surrounding landscape with oak wood floors and local stone walls. Floor-to-ceiling windows fill the villa with light and offer panoramic views across the fells. The fireplace and kitchen on the ground floor offers the perfect place to unwind after a long day of skiing, whilst the top floor sauna allows you and your guests to relax before bed. One of the huge advantages of staying at the villa is its access to almost 40 different winter activities. Adults and children alike can enjoy a multitude of experiences including ice karting, ice fishing, snowboarding, downhill skiing and snow sculpting. We also recommend paying a visit to the arctic zoo and enjoying the ultimate Finnish Lapland experience; a husky and reindeer safari, as well as a trip to see Santa.
