Looking for that final touch of luxury to pull your next skiing trip together? The pinnacle of comfort, convenience and exclusivity, travelling privately is the perfect finishing touch to your upcoming alpine escape.
Oxford Ski Company partner 365 Aviation has put together a helpful guide to travelling to The Alps by private jet, from the best airports for your destination to which type of aircraft you should charter.
Why should I travel by private jet?
Travelling privately affords you the ultimate convenience, allowing you to fly at a time that suits you. Skip the stress and monotony of travelling via commercial airlines, and instead opt for the peace of mind that private travel brings.
There are few commodities as precious as time — and time is something you want to make the most of when on holiday. Whilst travelling commercially can eat into your holiday, particularly when struck by delays or complications, travelling privately helps you to maximise time. By travelling by private jet, you can fly direct and shorten the transfer time by using smaller airports located closer to your destination.
You can expect an unrivalled level of comfort, too. Spacious cabins and superb in-flight services - such as a dedicated catering service - help to make it an unforgettable travel experience. Truly, your holiday begins the second you step foot on the plane.
What is the best airport to fly to?
If you're planning a trip to the Alps, there are numerous airports to choose from depending on your destination and the size of aircraft you prefer to charter.
France
Chambéry Airport (CMF / LFLB) is a great starting point for exploring the most popular ski resorts in the French Alps, both in the Southern and Northern regions. This airport, located in the beautiful French Savoie region, has become a preferred choice for many clients throughout the winter season due to its close proximity to the Three Valleys.
Although it is a small airport, it has a private terminal specifically dedicated to private jet travellers. Here, you’ll be treated to a wide range of VIP amenities, including catering and a limousine service.
However, if you're looking for an alternative to Chambéry, Annecy (NCY / LFLP), Geneva (GVA / LSGG), or Sion (SIR / LSGS) each present a great option.
From Chambéry Airport:
- Meribel – Approx. 1hr20 drive / 25-minute helicopter transfer
- Courchevel – Approx. 1hr20 drive / 20-minute helicopter transfer
- Morzine – Approx. 1hr30 drive / 35-minute helicopter transfer
- Tignes/Val d’Isere - Approx. 2hr drive / 30-minute helicopter transfer
Switzerland
If you're planning a trip to the Swiss Alps, Zurich (ZRH / LSZH) and Geneva (GVA / LSGG) Airports are two of the best options to consider for your flight itinerary. However, if you prefer landing closer to your destination, there are smaller airports available as well.
Geneva Airport is a popular choice among clients as it serves as a major international hub for ski resorts in the Swiss Alps. However, due to high demand in the winter months, it's also recommended to consider flying to alternative airports such as Sion (SIR / LSGS), Samedan (SMV / LSZS) or Annecy (NCY / LFLP).
Geneva Airport is home to three premium executive lounges, a fully equipped conference room and a meeting room, promising you a visit that will see all of your needs met.
Zurich Airport, the largest international airport in Switzerland, is situated 10 kilometres north of the city and offers dedicated facilities and premium lounge hospitality through multiple fixed-base operators (FBOs) such as Jet Aviation and Execujet.
Travelling to Switzerland's ski resorts:
- Davos - Klosters – Approx. 2hr drive / 55-minute helicopter transfer from Zurich Airport
- Verbier – Approx. 45-minute drive / 10-minute helicopter transfer from Sion Airport
- Zermatt – Approx. 1hr15 drive / 15-minute helicopter transfer from Sion Airport
- St Moritz – 10-minute drive from Samedan Airport
Austria
Innsbruck Airport (INN / LOWI) is a popular international airport located in the heart of the Austrian Alps, primarily due to its proximity to several sought-after ski resorts, including the world-renowned St. Anton. Boasting a dedicated private lounge, passengers can enjoy a wide range of VIP services that are designed to make their travel experience as comfortable and stress-free as possible.
From Innsbruck:
- Lech – Approx. 1hr30 drive / 45-minute helicopter transfer
- St. Anton – Approx. 1hr20 drive / 35-minute helicopter transfer
What is the best type of aircraft to charter?
If you're planning a ski holiday in the Alps, it's best to opt for an aircraft that offers a good combination of range, cabin space, and luggage space. 365 Aviation's Charter Managers will work closely with you to suggest the most suitable private jet depending on cabin preference, onboard requirements, group size and ski equipment.
Choosing an aircraft also depends on the runway at the arrival airport. Light jets, such as the Pilatus PC-24, are best for the shortest airport runways; for larger airports, you could instead opt for a super mid-size jet like the Challenger 350.
If you're looking to get out onto the slopes as soon as possible, consider reducing your airport transfer time by opting for a helicopter transfer to your resort.
What to know when chartering a private jet
As with all travel arrangements, there are some important considerations to bear in mind when planning to charter a private jet for your upcoming ski holiday.
Book in advance
During peak ski season, flight slots can fill up very quickly. If you are hoping to travel privately, be sure to book your private jet comfortably in advance to ensure availability.
De-icing
Make sure you bear in mind the possibility of de-icing — particularly given the cold climate of The Alps. Snow and ice are more than likely, making the need to de-ice the plan a strong possibility. Be aware of the additional fees that could be incurred here, as well as the time it may take to de-ice the plane.
Plan ahead with your transfers
Take care to plan and book your airport transfers in advance, whether you're opting for a ground or helicopter transfer.
Know your luggage
Prior to booking your flight, it's important to inform the Charter Manager of the amount of luggage you plan to bring along with you, including any skiing equipment. This will allow them to select the most appropriate jet for your trip.
