FAQs

What is the history of skiing in France?

Skiing in the French Alps is an unparalleled experience. While the resorts in countries such as Austria and Switzerland gradually evolved over time from mountain villages, the most famous French ski resorts were built in the 1960s, deliberately and thoughtfully, in the best places to ski in France.

The first French luxury ski resorts and chalets were established in the early 20th century, with the development of mountain trains and cable cars. However, it wasn’t until the end of World War II that France saw new generations of ski resorts that looked to build ski resorts from scratch in previously uninhabited mountain areas. Purpose-built resorts such as La Plagne, Les Arcs, and Avoriaz were created to offer direct access to the slopes and allow for the perfect ski-in / ski-out convenience.

Today, some 100 years later, France remains one of the premier winter sports regions in the world, popular with ski enthusiasts from all over the globe.
