Ryokan Sakaya
Setting the scene
Welcoming guests to Nozawa Onsen since the 18th Century, when it was the Sake brewery for feudal lords and aristocracy, this is a family-owned traditional Japanese Inn. It also happens to provide the best accommodation in the village, having been adapted and renovated to match discerning international tastes. However, that is not to say The Sakaya has lost any of its historic authenticity - this is still very much a ryokan, with tatami mat floors, futon bedding, sliding shoju screen doors and Zen touches throughout – the lounge overlooks mossy rocks, covered in pillows of soft snow surrounded by a pond teaming with colourful fish. You couldn’t find amore typically Japanese scene.
The Sakaya has maintained its prestigious reputation with many awards, including winning ‘Best Japanese Boutique Hotel’ earlier this decade. This was, in no small part, because of the beautiful in-house onsen facilities, featuring an indoor pool and an outdoor ‘rotenburo’ - it’s such an incredible treat being able to sit in a natural hot spring, au naturel, with snow falling around you. There is also a private family onsen that accommodates up to four people, and can be reserved for an hour’s exclusive use for no extra cost. The facilities also include a sauna and a full-service spa.
The hotel has a few Western Rooms for those wary of futon beds, but we’d suggest that you embrace all things Japanese and take a traditional room – suitable for twin, triple or quad use. The staff will fold up your futon every morning, place it in the cupboard, and replace it with a low table and seat backs.
The food served in the restaurant is outstanding – traditional multi-course Japanese kaiseki dining. Perhaps a bit much for every night, but we should certainly reserve you a table for one night.
Ryokan Sakaya is in the heart of the village, only a four-minute walk from the travelator that takes you up to the ski slopes.
